CHARLIE CHAPLIN ON VITOSHA. THE SHAPING OF FILM CULTURE IN BULGARIA AND THE BALKANS BETWEEN THE WORLD WARS (ЧАРЛИ ЧАПЛИН ЗА ВИТОША.
The book is an attempt to describe and analyse the emergence of a Balkan national film culture in the interwar years through a series of studies and articles. The focus is on the processes unfolding on the territory of the Kingdom of Bulgaria in the interaction of cinema with other arts, media, and major state institutions. For a clearer contextualisation, examples are taken from two areas in neighbouring countries that are closest in mentality: Vardar Macedonia, then part of the Serbo-Croatian Kingdom, and the Greek city of Thessaloniki. This collection attempts to fill the lack of interdisciplinary studies examining cinema development against the backdrop of cultural and social processes characteristic of the nation-state on the Balkans in this particular historical period. The examination contributes to a more nuanced understanding of both the examined period and the present day. The knowledge of the past remains imperative for comprehending contemporary challenges and prospects.
